Wintermute claims NEAR backed out of $11M stablecoin redemption deal

Wintermute founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy says the Near Foundation reneged on an offer to convert $11m million worth of its stablecoin. The NEAR Foundation and Aurora allegedly reneged on an offer to convert $11 million worth of USN stablecoin s, Wintermute founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy has claimed. In a Nov. 7 X (Twitter) post, Gaevoy claimed NEAR refused to honor a commitment to facilitate the sale of $11.2 million worth of its stablecoin USN for the FTX estate. 3. Summary To reiterate, I see this situation very clearly as: - NF committed to backstop USN and earmarked money for it - Aurora accepted the redemption in August (and only last week backtracked on it) - NF decided they have the power to keep the $11M to themselves instead of… — wishful cynic (@EvgenyGaevoy) November 7, 2023 Gaevoy said Wintermute was working with FTX to liquidate its assets for creditors which included the sale of $11.2 million worth of USN. Gaevoy claimed Wintermute executed the transaction — whi...

Pepecoin: Insider trading claims surface amid token theft

On-chain analyst Yazan reports insider selling of PEPE holdings, with around 400 billion PEPE sold, aligning with Pauly’s team exposure. Former Pepecoin (PEPE) promoter turned crypto influencer Jeremy “Pauly” Cahen has leveled insider trading allegations against the Pepecoin team following the reported theft of around 16 trillion PEPE tokens. Pauly is now exposing team members’ identities, divulging their wallet activities. On-chain analysts also point to significant Pepecoin transactions involving insiders. In an Aug. 26 update, Pauly disclosed that the Pepecoin team possesses approximately $16–17 million in PEPE tokens distributed across nine wallets. Surprisingly, the insiders refrained from selling the holdings. Instead, they strategically offloaded PEPE from a centralized exchange (CEX) wallet, establishing a substantial short position. “I’ll likely be working with multiple branches of law enforcement to ensure that @degenharambe & the rest of his partners on the @pepecoine...

Ethereum network upgrade and uptick in Arbitrum active users could trigger an ARB price reversal

Image
Positive Ethereum and Arbitrum network developments and the eventual improvement in crypto investor sentiment could lend a boost to ARB price. While Arbitrum’s governance token ARB has been in a consistent downturn since the airdrop in late March, its ecosystem shows healthy growth.  A recent Nansen report shows that Arbitrum’s activity improved after the airdrop, stabilizing “at a level higher” than before the airdrop. The daily active users, gas fees and transaction count maintained consistent higher levels on the Ethereum rollup since April 2023. The gap between the number of active users on Arbitrum and Optimism widened after the Aribtrum airdrop, closing in on Ethereum. Daily Active Users of Arbitrum, Ethereum and Optimism (past 6 months). Tether USDT market cap breaks ATH, Binance CEO points at regulatory caps

Image
At a time when USDT is touching new market cap highs, the other stablecoins are struggling to keep their market dominance. Tether-issued USDT (USDT) stablecoin broke past a new all-time-high market cap of over $83 billion as it continues its stablecoin market dominance. The new ATH market cap for the USDT stablecoin comes in a year when other stablecoin issuers are struggling to remain afloat due to regulatory ire. The same was pointed out by cryptocurrency exchange Binance’s CEO Changpang Zhao aka CZ. Tether USDT market cap chart. Source: Coinmarketcap CZ in a quote tweet drew attention towards BUSD, a Binance stablecoin issued by Paxos. The Binance CEO said that “BUSD was a fully regulated stablecoin that was ‘capped’ by NYDFS at a $23 billion and currently sits at a $5 billion market cap and since then USDT has seen tremendous growth.” BUSD, a fully regulated stablecoin, was "capped" (no new minting) by NYDFS at $23b. Bitcoin and most major altcoins are selling-off on rallies, proof that investor sentiment remains negative in the short-term. The United States stock markets are trying to recover on reports that the debt ceiling talks are showing promise and a debt default may be avoided. However, the same enthusiasm is not seen in the cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin (BTC) has slipped back below the $27,000 support on May 17, indicating that buyers are struggling to sustain the relief rallies. Institutional investors seem to be booking profits due to the macro uncertainty. CoinShares’ Digital Asset Fund Flows Report shows a total outflow of $200 million from digital asset investment products in four consecutive weeks. Daily cryptocurrency market performance. Source: Coin360 While the short-term picture remains negative, the chart structure on Bitcoin has not been broken. Bitcoin has corrected about 15% from its local high of $31,000 made on April 14 but it remains above $25,000, indicating that the w...

Crypto Stories: Scott Melker tells the story of how he became The Wolf of All Streets

Image
Crypto analyst Scott Melker talked about his journey as a trader and how he found the crypto space while working as a DJ. Scott Melker, commonly known in the crypto space as “The Wolf of All Streets,” tells the story of how he went from performing very poorly trading stocks and mutual funds to becoming one of the most-followed crypto analysts in the industry.  In the latest episode of Cointelegraph’s Crypto Stories, Melker narrates the tale of how the name The Wolf of All Streets came about. According to Melker, it all started as a joke, as he was also known for being a disc jockey. He explains: “Somebody jokingly told me that ‘Why are you talking about these charts, DJ? Stay in your lane. You know music — you don’t know anything about markets. You’re some kind of fake Wolf of Wall Street or something.’ And I said, ‘Ha, I’m the Wolf of All Streets.” Melker says that he temporarily changed his name as a joke, but the nickname stuck, and people started calling him Wolf. “It was a joke...

How a new cold wallet model may solve the mnemonic phrase dilemma

Image
A Swiss-based company has patented three card pack models that promote wallet security without the vulnerability of manually securing a seed phrase. Part of the fear that first-time users experience when using cryptocurrencies is the security of their assets. Unlike fiat currency, which can be stored in a physical wallet, digital currencies must be held in the lesser-known digital wallet. What’s more, with the growing adoption of blockchain technologies, hackers are finding digital wallets an increasingly appealing target. Unfortunately, when it comes to security, cryptocurrency users must learn not only how to protect their assets, but also ensure that their passwords and mnemonic phrases aren’t lost or stolen. By definition, a mnemonic phrase — also known as a seed phrase — is the simplest way to recover a lost private key. The multi-word secret recovery phrase then becomes the master key that generates all the private keys for users’ wallets, which provides access to their crypto f...

Silk Road Bitcoin for sale? US government-linked addresses transfer $1B in BTC

US law enforcement agencies have confiscated thousands of BTC from the Silk Road over the years, and a significant chunk of it has been auctioned from time to time. Over 50,000 Bitcoin (BTC), worth $1 billion, were moved from multiple wallets connected to United States Government law enforcement seizures and transfer red to new addresses , with some moved to Coinbase on March 8.  According to data shared by on-chain analytics firm PeckShield, three transfers were made from U.S. law enforcement agency’s wallets. These wallets held nearly 51,000 BTC seized by U.S. agencies from the Silk Road marketplace in November 2021. The confiscated BTC was consolidated into two wallet addresses. Argo increases Bitcoin production despite BTC difficulty growth

Publicly-listed Bitcoin (BTC) mining firm Argo Blockchain has increased its daily BTC production despite a significant spike in network difficulty. During the month of February, Argo mined a total of 162 of Bitcoin or BTC equivalents, translating to 5.7 BTC per day, the firm announced in an operational update on March 7. Argo’s daily Bitcoin production rate in February surged 7% from 5.4 BTC per day produced in January, despite a 10% month-over-month increase in average network difficulty. Blockchain DEXs Onchain and Camelot part ways over IFO spat

"We urge @CamelotDEX delete any information related to @OnchainTrade from all of your platforms as soon as possible," wrote OnChain developers. In a dispute that originated Feb. 22, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) Onchain Trade and Camelot terminated an agreement for the former's initial fair offering (IFO), with both firms alleging that the opposing counterparty acted in bad faith. An IFO, whilst still an emerging concept, typically involves promises made by developers consisting of no venture capitalist involvement, no whitelist, no presale, and vast majority of income going to token holders, on top of a traditional initial coin offering.  As told by Onchain, developers began negotiations with Camelot for an IFO, for which the latter charged a fee of 2%, and both parties agreed upon the amount. In addition, Camelot required that Onchain exclusively sell tokens on its platform, to which Onchain also agreed. However, at this point, Onchain alleged that Camelot became ...

Bitcoin bulls aim to hold this week’s BTC gains leading into Friday’s $675M options expiry

Image
$675 million in BTC options are set to expire on Feb. 17, but bears could aim to take control by pushing Bitcoin price below $22,000. While the U.S. Federal Reserve (FED) continues to monitor the overheated economy, the most likely scenario is further interest rate hikes to curb inflation. The unintended consequence is the heightened government debt cost, creating a bullish environment for scarce assets such as commodities, stock market and cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin’s price gain practically extinguished bears expectation for a sub-$21,500 options expiry on Feb. 17, so their bets are unlikely to pay off as the deadline approaches. Bitcoin investors' primary concern is the possibility of further impacts from regulators following the staking rewards program by the Kraken exchange being halted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Feb. 9 and the crackdown on Binance USD (BUSD) stablecoin issuing on Feb. 13. Even if the newsflow remains negative, bulls still can profit in ...

Ransom refusals hit attackers where it hurts: 40% revenue drop in 2022 — Chainalysis

Image
A number of industry pundits believe the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control’s threat to impose sanctions has victims thinking twice about paying up. Ransomware victims have seemingly had enough of the extortion, with ransomware revenues for attackers plummeting 40% to $456.8 million in 2022. Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis shared the data in a Jan. 19 report, noting that the figures don’t necessarily mean the number of attacks is down from the previous year. Instead, Chainalysis noted that companies have been forced to tighten cybersecurity measures, while ransom victims have been increasingly unwilling to pay attackers their demands. Total value extorted by ransomware attackers between 2017 and 2022. Source: Chainalysis. The findings formed part of Chainalysis’ 2023 Crypto Crime Report. Last year, revenue from Ransomware was a whopping $602 million at the time of the 2022 report, which was later tipped up to $766 million. Chainalysis added that the nature of blockchain m...

Crypto community unimpressed by SBF’s lengthy Substack letter

In the letter, SBF denies stealing funds and stashing billions of dollars away. The crypto community has voiced their opinions on former FTX CEO Sam “SBF’ Bankman-Fried’s “pre-mortem overview” of the collapse of FTX he published on Jan. 12 as a letter on Substack.  https://t.co/XVd0BPHxEU — SBF (@SBF_FTX) January 12, 2023 As previously reported by Cointelegraph, SBF denied the allegations made against him in the lengthy letter and maintained that FTX US had been “fully solvent” at the time the firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, with approximately $350 million in cash available. Bankman-Fried further stated that FTX International had a substantial amount of assets (approximately $8 billion) when John Ray became CEO. According to Bankman-Fried, “No funds were stolen. Alameda lost money due to a market crash it was not adequately hedged for–as Three Arrows and others have this year.” Unfortunately for him, the crypto community seemed unimpressed by SBFs “pre-mortem overview....

What is the Trust Wallet and how do you use it?

Image
Trust Wallet is a secure noncustodial cryptocurrency wallet that supports multiple blockchains. A secure cryptocurrency wallet is crucial for those investing in the growing cryptocurrency market. Technically, crypto wallets are pieces of software that enable users to send and receive digital currencies, like Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and Litecoin (LTC). Cryptocurrency wallets are typically used to store multiple coins and tokens at once. However, most wallets only support a limited number of digital currencies. These wallets can come in the form of hardware (much like a flash drive) that can be connected to the internet as needed or digital storage (like a banking app) that can be accessed on a device. To ensure security, cryptocurrency wallets store codes called private keys that need to match with a public key before the wallet owner can spend their money. Trust Wallet is an example of such a wallet.  It allows users to control and access their digital assets and provides support ...
